Silk Tree
(Albizia julibrissin, aka Persian Silk Tree, Pink Siris, Bastard Tamarind, Nemu tree, Lenkoran Acacia or Mimosa). Silk trees are found in the southern half of the United States, in Japan, and in Europe. The specimen tested in this food trial came from a street tree in Colorado where they are not known to range naturally. The seeds are used as a food for livestock and wildlife, and the sweetly-scented flowers are a good nectar source for bees which makes this an interesting subject for food trial purposes. My hermit crabs completely demolished a frond of leaf and the blossom could not be found (either consumed or burried). All of the tiny leaves where pulled off and eaten. So far the seed pod remains untouched.
