Nut-bearing Trees
Wanting to gather info on nut-bearing trees. If you have info related to this topic, please comment!
I did a trial with horse chestnuts (the fruits of Aesculus hippocastanum). The crabs were offered a cracked chestnut once per week for the last month, but they never touched it. The nuts always were fresh, I'm going to try and offer chestnuts that are already dried, a week old, or maybe sprouted, if I can get them to germinate. Edible chestnuts (Castanea sp.) were eaten by my crabs, although not with much enthusiasm.
Land hermit crabs need a varied diet, but human-grade food sources do not properly mimic what these scavengers might find in their natural environment. These are my notes regarding successes and failures of the food trials I have conducted on possible non-human grade food sources while developing a line of all-natural pet food products called Crabotanicals.
