Avocado leaves

avocado houseplant
Avocado leaves. Humans can eat the leaves which are reported to taste like anise, but the avocado leaf contains a toxin called persin which can cause digestive problems in livestock.

After purchasing some over-ripe Hass avocados, we planted an avocado pit in some organic potting soil. It has grown into a nice-looking houseplant, and like all things green eventually end up the subject of a hermit crab food trial. The first leaf we put in the tank disappeared. When it’s remains were recovered we realized that Shredder had taken it into his burrow and it had sustained him through a successful molt. Since then, the tank's inhabitants have devoured 3 more avocado leaves without any problems.
